Sunset Magazine was one of them, and I have the fondest memories of flipping through the issues that had been marked with my grandmother’s, mom’s, and aunt’s initials once they’d made the rounds through our family.
Sunset Magazine is a lifestyle publication that has defined the industry since 1898. I’ve always been a huge admirer of their work, so when I was approached by Jonathan Simkins, Editor and Content Producer for Sunset’s WildLands column to write featured articles, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.
Sunset Magazine is a leading lifestyle publication that focuses on homes, gardening, cooking, and travel, with an emphasis on the United State’s Western region. Over one million copies are circulated per month, and its readers also enjoy its digital articles and informative social media posts.
Jon Simkins and I first connected on LinkedIn, where I pitched him an idea for an article on one of California’s most dangerous ghost towns, located in New Idria and known both for its dark history and even darker environmental struggles.
I went on to research, visit, and report on New Idria, working closely with the Bureau of Land Management to access the site. I conducted interviews, acted as the photographer on the project, and drafted a two-part article series sharing my adventure. It went on to be the leading article series across all of Sunset’s categories for the next three months and confirmed the strong standing that WildLands was developing with its readership.
After that, I visited Santa Fe, New Mexico, photographing its ancient petroglyphs, visiting nearby national monuments, and developing two itinerary-based articles for Sunset’s readers.

"Someone who I grew to trust from the start to the end of this project"
"Over the course of approximately a decade between newsrooms and editorial offices, I've come to realize just how liberally labels like 'writer' are thrown around. Hannah, on the other hand, is an indisputable and refreshing exception, embodying at every turn what it means to be a genuine wordsmith with an indefatigable zest to portray the environments in which she so readily immerses.
It is a rare treat that working alongside someone elicits significant returns of writing and editing improvements, but such has been the case during each collaboration with Hannah."
